How can a veteran get a prosthetic limb covered through the VA in North Carolina?

A veteran enrolled in VA health care gets a prosthetic limb covered by talking with their VA care team, who decide on the prosthesis and authorize the care. You can ask your VA care team to authorize your prosthetic care with Richardson Prosthetics & Orthotics, and our staff help coordinate the authorization with the VA. We accept Veterans Affairs, work closely with veterans and active duty service members, and fit prostheses at our clinics in Charlotte and Durham, NC, and on mobile visits.

How can a veteran get a prosthetic limb covered through the VA in North Carolina?

Richardson Prosthetics & Orthotics accepts Veterans Affairs, and you can ask your VA care team to authorize your prosthetic care with us; our staff help coordinate the authorization with the VA. Care is led by Rondell Richardson, MBA, CO, BOCP, who has provided prosthetic and orthotic care in Charlotte for over 25 years. Here is how it works:

  1. Enroll in VA health care. If you are not enrolled yet, apply for VA health care through the VA.
  2. Talk to your VA care team. Tell your VA care team you need a prosthetic limb or a replacement. They decide on the prosthesis and authorize the care.
  3. Ask for Richardson Prosthetics & Orthotics. Ask your VA care team to authorize your prosthetic care with us. Our staff help coordinate the authorization with the VA.
  4. Get fitted. We capture the shape of your limb with a 3D scan or a hand cast, check the fit with a test socket and deliver your prosthesis. Most patients have 3 to 4 visits before delivery.
  5. Keep your prosthesis fitting. We provide adjustments and refinements, follow-up care and long-term support as your needs change.

How Richardson Prosthetics & Orthotics helps

We work closely with active duty service members and veterans to deliver personalized prosthetic and orthotic solutions built for durability, mobility and everyday demands. Each fitting starts with listening: we consider your concerns alongside your physician, therapists and family.

  • Help with VA authorization: our staff coordinate the authorization with the VA.
  • Prostheses for every level of limb loss: above knee, below knee, upper extremity, partial foot and Symes.
  • Advanced components: we are certified to fit microprocessor knees and feet, i-Limb and Bebionic hands, vacuum-assisted suspension and Össur Direct Socket. See microprocessor knees and 3D-printed prosthetics.
  • Two clinics and mobile visits: Charlotte, Durham by appointment, and mobile visits for amputees in North Carolina and upstate South Carolina.
  • Care after the fitting: adjustments and refinements, follow-up care and long-term support.
  • Spanish-speaking support: Se habla español.

Who it is for (and who it is not for)

Richardson Prosthetics & Orthotics is a good fit if you are:

  • A veteran in North Carolina with upper or lower limb loss who wants to use VA benefits for a first or replacement prosthesis.
  • An active duty service member who needs prosthetic or orthotic care.
  • A veteran who finds it hard to travel to a clinic and would benefit from a mobile visit.
  • A veteran who would rather talk through care in Spanish.

We are not the right fit if you need:

  • A decision about your VA enrollment, eligibility or benefits. Those decisions come from the VA.
  • Amputation surgery, wound treatment or other medical care for the limb itself. That care comes from your surgeon and physician; we work alongside them.
  • A prosthetic part bought without an evaluation and fitting. Every device we provide is fitted in person.
